COMMUNITY BENEFITS
Nubian Square Ascends will create the following outcomes for Nubian Square and the surrounding Roxbury community:
-
Create a critical mass of African American arts, entertainment, and cultural activities that will enliven the Square on evenings and weekends
-
Create opportunities for local Black and Hispanic artists, minority-owned businesses, food/culinary entrepreneurs of color, and community-based creative class stakeholders to have a firmly-rooted presence in the Square
-
Provide job and M/WBE opportunities through the office/lab building, the NuSq Life Science Training Center, and Nubian Market
-
Leverage local medical technical institutions to create additional training and education space, increasing the skill of Roxbury’s workforce and allowing it to more fully participate in a regional economy defined by the medical, biotech, and life science industries.
-
Create wealth that stays in Roxbury
-
Address the critical lack of parking for the Square
-
Eustis Street improvements, including new sidewalks, street trees, curb extensions, drop off area, underground utilities and Art Yard
-
LEED Gold sustainability measures: high performance buildings, solar array, and ground source heat pumps
-
Ongoing maintenance of green island at the Square
PROMOTE ROXBURY’S HERITAGE & SUPPORT LOCAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP
The first floor of the commercial building contains approximately 23,000 SF of rentable square footage dedicated to the Nubian Culinary Center. This, along with the Black Market vendor spaces in the public square and along Artist’s Way, will offer significantly below-market rent to small, local businesses, or sole proprietorships engaged in artistic, craft, or culinary businesses.
PUBLIC REALM
Nubian Ascends will also entail the creation of a high-quality public realm. It will feature a large flexible plaza at the corner of Palmer Street and Washington Street, and an “Artist’s Way” that runs through the project site connecting that plaza to Harrison Ave. The Artist’s Way will feature temporary artist/artisan fairs, farmer’s markets, and other public events.
